Hale Library

Workers from a dozen subcontractors work on restorations to Hale Library’s first floor in August 2019. Two workers suffered minor injuries Tuesday after a small area of the library's third floor collapsed while it was being poured.

A new innovation lab will be a part of Hale Library’s restoration work.

The Sunderland Foundation Innovation Lab, made possible through a $2.5 million investment from the Sunderland Foundation from Leawood, will offer access to technologies such as digital media production tools, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, immersive digital environments and other innovative technology.

The foundation provides grants for construction, including higher education projects.

“We’re profoundly grateful for the Sunderland Foundation’s support of a next-generation Hale Library,” said Lori Goetsch, dean of K-State Libraries. “Their generosity will provide our students with cutting-edge technology in a creative, high-tech environment. I know we will be blown away by what K-State students can create when they have access to such amazing resources.”

Library officials said they will announce the first floor’s opening date later this week, with the second floor scheduled for a spring opening.

The entire building should be open by the end of 2020, university officials said, following a catastrophic May 2018 fire that closed the campus’s central library for the entire 2018-19 school year.
